Ever spent hours on end trying to fix a Maya bug 'cos you've pressed something accidentally? Well, I have!
For instance, when your manipulator arrows suddenly decide to be tiny, like on above picture. To fix this all you have to do is press + on the number row of your keyboard.
Another annoyance, I have spent a whole day on fixing, is a simple Maya bug that cannot be explained any other way than: Maya sucks!
For this I don't have a picture but victims know what I'm talking about. Your move/scale/rotate manipulators show up in perspective view but not in side and/or front/top view. I have found a very helpful tip on this forum: http://forums.cgsociety.org/archive/index.php/t-494678.html
Basically what you do is, start Maya back up. You might have to do this a few times. Open a new scene, create a sphere, click on the rotation tool. At this point it should show up in all views. If it does, you are (hopefully) sorted and can open your model back up with all the manipulators showing up in all orthographical views.
Now to some happier shores:

I found a very useful tutorial for easy human character modelling. What you do is, create a basic sketch of front and side view of your character and import it as a texture on a flat plane in Maya. Then you use a cylinder as described in the tutorial and shape it according to your sketch. It is fast and you can have an anatomically correct (or fitting to your character) model in just a few hours.

I have also found two quite good tutorials for face/head modelling. One is for 3ds Max, so if you don't know your way around Maya and it's commands it might be a bit tricky. It shows you how to model a face using planes and edge extrusion.

The other one is a video showing you how to model a face using cutting faces and splitting polygons. Seems a bit easier to me.
